Down with shmatehs*!
Okay, we HAVE to do something.
Non-knitters are walking around North America wearing polyester shmatehs as ponchos. These things look more like the rubbery matting that goes under a rug so you don't slip and break your neck...so why are people wearing them?
It must be because they don't knit. Because if they DID knit, they could make a beautiful and stylish poncho for the same money as those ugly, badly conceived polyester-formed-lace slip-stoppers are costing them.

So it's up to us. Teach a friend to knit. Especially a shmateh-poncho wearing one. Show them how simple yarn-overs can make lace on big needles. Take them by the hand and lead them to the sale bin at your yarn store, where poncho-worthy treats are just waiting to be converted into shoulder-warmers. Don't let another non-knitter buy more ugly, scratchy synthetic mesh to wrap themselves in. We can make a difference!

Where do you start? How about here. You've never seen so many poncho patterns in your life! And the kind author of the page keeps adding new ones as she finds them.

*shmateh n. [yiddish] 1. rag.
